Beagle Training

Dear Fellow Beagle Owner:

Ready for Beagle Training 101??? You know, owning and training a beagle has been one of the most exciting adventures of my life. When I first brought our beagle home, I thought he would fun loving, easy to handle (because beagles are sort of small in size after all), and obedient. Well, they are fun loving, but obedience must be taught from a pup because this breed lives and dies by the “scent of surroundings!” This is why beagles are great hunting hounds. As far as being easy to handle…it really depends on how hyper your dog is and how strong. Mine has been hyper oftentimes, but he is calming down after a couple of years. He is also a larger sized dog in the breed, so he can pull really hard on the leash when he gets a running start. Otherwise, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed him as a pet!

Here’s the rundown on what to expect from your beagle for training and play…they are really great dogs!

>> Fun loving! Beagles are fun to be around. They have a mild temperament but can also be very hyper at times. Beagle training takes time and patience, but it’s an adventure every step of the way! *Hint: Beagle temperament is also mischievous…so don’t let those sad eyes fool you!

>> Very Smart – Beagles are fast learners, but also use their sense of smell quite a bit to determine where they go and what they do. They respond well to playtime for doing tricks and can also be taught basic obedience training using doggy “treats.”

>> Friendly to Strangers – Mostly beagles are friendly to everyone once they realize there is no threat. They often howl or growl at first to get the person’s attention. Once a stranger pets him, however, the dog will usually take to just about anyone.

Beagle’s Sense of Smell

I’ve discovered that although beagles are very smart, they have a strong sense of smell that often times distracts them. This is especially true while walking the dog around the yard or on trails. Once my dog catches an interesting scent, then he is “on the trail” no matter what I say or do. It’s to be expected since beagles are bred to be hunters.

Pack Lovers

Keep in mind that beagles are often kept in packs, so they really crave attention from their owners if other dogs aren’t around to keep them company. I have a cat, but he’s not much company to my dog. In fact, my beagle loves to chase the cat and the cat loves to intimidate him..so it’s a mutual love-love relationship! Snoopy craves attention from us and loves to feel that he’s part of the family. Be prepared to spend a lot of time with your beagle! In conclusion, I would choose a beagle again over any other breed of dog if I could choose again.

So now that you know the REAL SCOOP of owning one of these precious pups, you’re ready to enter the wonderful world of beagle training!

How to Train a Beagle

Whether your beagle is a newborn pup or several months old, it’s never too early to start the dog training process. If you have the pup from birth or at least from weaning time, then spend the first two to three months getting to know your dog. Don’t try to train your beagle until he feels comfortable around every member of the family, outside guests, and the house/yard overall. Make him aware of the comfort and security of the home first. Then training your dog will be much easier.
